My approach

Emotional difficulties often arise when we feel ill-equipped to manage the power of our feelings in a way that is acceptable to us. We can find ourselves overwhelmed with feelings of helplessness and depression; we can feel anger or even rage that seems out of all proportion to what is happening in our lives; we can feel anxious or scared of bodily symptoms that we have no understanding of and which we connect with indicators of serious illness.

Often these feelings render us isolated and unable to communicate easily with others. Although there may be events in the present that are troubling, the sheer extent of our feelings may indicate difficulties from the past that have not been resolved satisfactorily.

The most important first step is to find someone with whom it is possible to feel understood by. A one-off consultation will often enable problems to be put in context and a way forward found.

Following a phone call or e-mail I will usually suggest a meeting to see if psychotherapy is going to be a useful course to follow. Sometimes it is not the preferred choice and then I will attempt to suggest alternatives. If it is, then a plan for therapy will be agreed between us.

Experience

20 years counselling and psychotherapy of which several years were spent working in the NHS as a clinical psychotherapist at a South London teaching hospital.

Between 1999 and 2003 I chaired the Richmond branch of CRUSE, the bereavement charity. This gave me an ongoing interest in supporting people who are suffering a bereavement.

Up until 2003 I chaired the London branch of The Association for Workers of Children with Social and Emotional Difficulties. I have a particular interest in those supporting or teaching troubled children.
